Being environmentally responsible

The Castle Climbing Centre is one of the 20 businesses we spoke to as we celebrate having supported 1,000 London businesses. The climbing centre is based in Hackney and has been a Heart of the City member since 2019.

We spoke to Beth Martin, Sustainability Officer and Duncan Howard, CEO at the Castle about their responsible business journey. The building is a water pumping station that was built in the 1800s, so a lot of the castle’s responsible business focus has been on environmental practices, initially to reduce energy loss. The Castle’s board is actively involved in being an environmentally responsible business so they’ve introduced lots of sustainable practices including running a sustainable, organic garden, using food waste and fitting out the building efficiently.

Having joined Heart of the City in 2019, the Castle has benefited from our workshops as well as being part of our community. As a Heart of the City member, they’ve found it really useful to meet other businesses that they can learn from. It’s also helped them to understand how they can focus on other responsible business areas and how they can have a social impact on their local community in Hackney. Watch the video below:
