N-Able Group (incorporating ECD Architect and Keegans surveyors) care about the way they do business and have kept their employees, community, clients and social purpose at the heart of their business strategy and decision making. In this article, Anna Dewey, Associate Director, N-Able Group (Foundation Member 2018) shares with us how they’re creating a happy and motivated workforce.

“In early 2017 N-Able Group set about involving all staff in refreshing the business’ core values. At the same time, we developed our responsible business goals to align with our values – Valuing People, Improving the Environment and Investing in the Community.

As a property consultancy company working for a wide range of public sector clients, engaging with the community was a key focus. We therefore engaged with volunteer brokerage, Benefacto and our employees began volunteering with various community organisation across London. Benefacto in turn introduced us to Heart of the City to further support us with developing our other key CSR activities.

A year on and now with the support and guidance from Heart of the City we are embracing our responsible business values and goals. We are particularly focused on valuing our people, committed to creating an environment where our staff can flourish and achieve personal and professional goals. We know that establishing a workplace where people feel motivated, supported and connected doesn’t just help them – it also helps us to attract and retain the best people.”

Six ways we’re building and empowering our workforce!


Getting the balance right
N-Able recognises the importance of a good work-life balance. We believe that individuals perform at their best when their work doesn’t overwhelm other aspects of their lives. On top of holiday allowance, staff are able to take additional leave to fulfil certain out of office commitments, whether this involves taking time out for volunteering, study leave or family commitments.

For example, we recently celebrated Ashok Parmar’s 21 years at Keegans with cake and a gift to mark the occasion. And this year we were proud to sponsor and support a member of staff competing for Great Britain at the Triathlon World Championships.

Enjoying ourselves in and out of work
We all like to socialise as a team and every quarter, all staff are invited to a fun social event organised by the Group. Our socials this year have included go-karting, table tennis, junkyard golf and not forgetting our Christmas party. We always get an enthusiastic turnout.

Keeping staff informed
Keeping everybody informed and up-to- date is very important to the N-Able Group. We hold Knowledge Cafés, three times a year, which all staff attend for an afternoon at a venue away from the office. The agenda focuses on key business matters and hot topics to develop staff knowledge and share expertise. Every quarter we also produce an e-newsletter ‘The Bridge’ bringing together news from across the business.

Training and Development
We invest and support staff in achieving professional qualifications as well as improving their knowledge and skills to meet both client and business needs. Annual appraisals and regular one-2-one meetings between staff and their managers enables us to jointly plan career development and continuous learning opportunities.

We have a successful APC Chartership programme where every staff member on the programme is allocated a counsellor and mentor for the duration of their studies to ensure they are kept on track and have all the support and help they need to pass the exam. We provide a programme of APC seminars as well as internal and external workshops and CPD events. N-Able also funds all the required training and resources and provides dedicated study leave.

“With ECD’s support I passed my Part-3 qualification in February 2018 and am proud to now be listed on the Architects Registration Board (ARB). My career began at the age of 19 with a summer internship, and now, seven years later, I am looking forward to continuing my journey with ECD.”

Volunteering opportunities
We encourage all our staff to be active in the community. Every member of staff is encouraged to take a day’s paid leave to devote to volunteering. We are proud of the fact that 67% of staff took advantage of the volunteering day and got involved in wide range of activities from arts clubs to gardening and skills training via Benefacto.

Charity events
The N-Able Social and Charities Committee plays a vital role, not only in bringing all employees together for regular social events but also in supporting our chosen charity CRASH through fund raising activities. We are proud to have raised £4,750 in 2017 through our staff efforts organising and contributing to pub quizzes, bake sales, half marathons, Bear Grylls survival challenges and Santa fun runs, to name a few events!
