After being asked about their responsible business commitments by a prospective client, law firm Beale and Co joined Heart of the City as a member in 2018 to help refine their approach.

Partner, Nathan Modell leads on developing the firm’s programme alongside trainee solicitor, Elizabeth Andrews. The pair closely followed HotC’s responsible business road map, starting by reviewing their existing activities and surveying employees in their London, Dublin and Dubai offices.

With the support of Heart of the City, they’ve made great strides with their programme. During 2018, the firm took part in fundraising activities including the London Legal Walk, hosted regular office socials – and raised around £10,000 for new charity partner CRASH; the construction industry charity!

In response to their employee survey, Nathan and Lizzie worked with their HR department to run a ‘Wellbeing Week’, promoting positive health and wellbeing at work.   A ‘Curry and Chat’ night and desk yoga sessions helped them to secure a wellbeing budget to develop these activities.

The pair were also keen to think about Beale and Co’s impact on the environment, so they took some simple steps to reduce their carbon footprint. They worked with their facilities management team to introduce SafeQ printing, switched to an eco-friendly taxi provider and eliminated plastic cups in their London office.

Reflecting on their year with Heart of the City, Nathan said

‘Heart of the City have been very supportive and inspiring, even when we thought we hadn’t made much progress our account manager inspired us to keep pushing forwards. We’ve seen an increase in employee engagement and are getting great feedback from clients about our responsible business activities.’

Beale and Co continue with Heart of the City in 2019 and with the help of an expert mentor are hoping to improve diversity and inclusion within the firm. We can’t wait to see where they take their responsible business programme!
