Supporting Islington businesses to do well by doing good

On Wednesday 5th September, Heart of the City and BIG Alliance hosted our first joint networking event to inspire Islington-based SMEs to be a force for good in their local community.

Kindly hosted by Finsbury Business Centre, this after work event marked the official launch of our partnership with BIG Alliance – to bring together a cluster of like-minded businesses in Islington to tackle local issues and engage in our responsible business programme.

We were delighted to welcome representatives from local businesses and networks including Islington Council, Zero Emissions Network and East London Business Alliance. Guests enjoyed rooftop drinks and views of Clerkenwell before hearing from a range of speakers including Ian and Hugh Hudson of Finsbury Business Centre (existing Heart of the City members) and Rachel Engel, Regional Head of Macquarie Group Foundation, who outlined the stark statistics about Islington as one of the most deprived boroughs in London.

Heart of the City and BIG Alliance also gave presentations to outline our offer for the 2019 Islington cluster:

  • Heart of the City and BIG Alliance are working together to recruit up to 15 Islington-based SMEs to come together to tackle local issues and engage in exciting responsible business activities.
  • The cluster will take part in funded (i.e. free to you) places on Heart of the City’s Year 1 Foundation Programme – an inspiring series of learning events, account management and online resources to help you kickstart your responsible business programme.
  • You will benefit from bespoke opportunities for your business to engage in the local community organised by BIG Alliance including pro bono, business skills volunteering and hosting work placements.

Applications for this unique opportunity are now open. To complete our short application please click here and reference the Islington event.

Guests finally had the opportunity to take part in an interactive Q&A session with our speakers who highlighted how SMEs can really make a difference to the local community and the role of volunteering in an organisation.

Huge thanks to all of those that attended and to our speakers and hosts.
