Survive and Thrive: A discussion on managing furlough

This week saw the first of our weekly webinars in the Survive and Thrive series – we discussed managing furlough as a lots of Heart of the City members have furloughed employees.

We were pleased to be joined by Jenna Hunter, employment law adviser and Director at Hunter Law and Katie Boots, HR Director at CCS and Chartered member of CIPD to share their advice and experiences on managing the furlough process.

Jenna shared considerations of furlough from a legal perspective, best practice around the process and what employees and employers can and can’t do during furlough. She also talked about how to manage returning to work and what to consider if an employee on furlough leaves the business, as well as discussing upcoming, and potential future, changes to the scheme.

Katie, who is currently managing the furlough process for over 100 employees, gave us an honest account of how CCS have managed and quickly adapted to overcome the initial challenges and find positives in the current working situation. She talked through how she and her team have made sure they’re supporting all employees, whether they’re furloughed or not, and how the CEO has been heavily involved in continued communication with everyone.

It was great to see all the Heart of the City members who attended and contributed to the group discussions and it was a really good opportunity for them to discuss their specific situations with our experts.

If you didn’t make it but have questions on the furlough process, we’ve published a guide to furlough, and Hunter Law is sending out a monthly coronavirus update.
