24 September was a busy day for Heart of the City. We celebrated City Giving Day by holding a breakfast workshop for our members on developing their responsible business programmes. And in the evening we went to Mansion House for the Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards, celebrating responsible business in London with lots of Heart of the City members and contributors nominated.
It was a successful night for the Heart of the City community! Winners of the Heart of the City award were Formation Architects, who joined us in 2017 and have developed a great responsible business programme. They won the award for their outreach programme Formation Community which focuses on supporting their local community in Lambeth. In 2018 they raised £4,802 for their charity partner UCLH Charity and this year they’ve been fundraising for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, as well as beginning to offer work placements to students from nearby schools.
We were so pleased to see K&M McLoughlin Decorating win in the Inclusive Employment category. This award is for businesses that remove barriers to employment for disadvantaged, underrepresented or minority groups and K&M won for their Skills for Jobs initiative. They’ve been a Heart of the City member since 2012 and have provided real work experience to unemployed young people, training them in painting and decorating and helping them to secure full-time work or apprenticeships in the construction industry.
It was also a great night for Heart of the City contributors, with Mace Group winning the Boosting Social Impact award for their Volunteering for Better Communities programme and Weil, Gotshal & Manges winning the Innovation award for their Micro Rainbow initiative, providing the UK’s first ever safe house for LGBTI refugees.
Well done to all these businesses for making a positive impact on people, places and the planet!
