Every month we like to share a recommendation from one of our ambassadors: something that inspires them in their responsible business work. This month we asked Janice Phayre, Head of Responsible Business at Sapphire Systems. Janice is part of our board advisory panel and Sapphire Systems’ CEO Ian Caswell is on our council.
Start out with Heart of the City
“Sapphire Systems is a leading enterprise software applications and digital operations technology provider. 15 years ago I attended Heart of the City workshops and rolled out the first responsible business programme in Sapphire Systems. We had about 50 staff in London and another 50 spread out around the rest of the country, the United States and India. I followed the advice of the experts; stole their ideas, downloaded Heart of the City resources, ran lunch and learns with pizza, voted for a chosen charity, set up a responsible business committee, found champions – and then we won the Heart of the City Dragon Award!
Get everyone involved
We now have 360 employees in six different countries and in each new office we have used the Heart of the City training and introduced responsible business to the local teams. We joined Heart of the City because Ian Caswell, our CEO wanted to do good. We have raised tens of thousands for our chosen charities, run workshops for hundreds of kids (with the help of the Brokerage), kept computer rooms open for the homeless, painted canal locks and swept pig stys. We are Carbon Neutral. To fund raise we have we answered thousands of quiz questions, eaten hundreds of cakes and lately we have run tens of wellbeing events online. The side effect is our responsible business programme is something that everyone is proud of, it helps people to connect, feel good about themselves, have fun and keep well. New colleagues want to join in. We talk about it with our clients and prospects and it helps to win business.
Get senior leaders on board
Inspired by the work we are doing senior management are using their ingenuity, compassion and expertise to add to our responsible business programme. For example, our Chief Technology Officer wants to run workshops and competitions to get kids to design bots to change people’s lives for the better. Our commitment is that the Sapphire team will build the winner their own ‘bot’. We are currently discussing with contacts we have through Heart of the City to see how best to roll this out and reach as many kids as possible.
