Meet Heart of the City’s new Stakeholder and Membership manager, Karina van Ginkel

We are pleased to announce that Karina joined Heart of the City on 2nd July 2018 as our new Stakeholder and Membership Manager! We caught up with Karina to find out what drew her to Heart of the City, what she’s looking forward to, and what our members can expect.

Karina joins us from Prime Advocates, a not-for-profit law firm and social finance consultancy, where she led on several social impact programmes as an Associate and Programme Manager. Previously, Karina worked as the Interim Social Responsibility Manager at White & Case LLP, a leading global law firm, where she led the London office’s corporate responsibility programmes, relationships and communications. While an associate in the White & Case Capital Markets team, Karina served as a champion for legal pro bono matters and was a member of the London Charity Partner Committee.

Welcome to Heart of the City! What drew you to the organisation?

I was initially drawn to Heart of the City during my Interim CSR Manager role when I was referred to its newsletter and the great resources contained therein. Since then, I have been a loyal subscriber and am thrilled to be joining the team!

You’re going to be our new Stakeholder and Membership Manager – what are you most looking forward to?

Heart of the City has a great reputation and is highly regarded by its stakeholders – I am looking forward to harnessing our existing powerful relationships, as well as developing new ones, to further improve our unique offering in support of small-to-medium sized businesses seeking to set up their responsible business programmes, both within the City of London and beyond.

How do you hope your achievements in your previous roles will create magic with HotC’s stakeholders and members in the future?

My previous roles offered me to the opportunity to build relationships and inspire people to take part in activities that positively impacted their society and the environment. I hope to utilise the skills and experience I’ve gained to motivate individuals and organisations to contribute to the greater development of the CSR profession by supporting Heart of the City members to develop their responsible business programmes.

5 interesting facts the world should know about Karina (that isn’t on LinkedIn)!

  1. I am from the U.S. of A – born in Houston, Texas but raised in Miami, Florida before going to law school and working in New York City. Do I miss the Miami sunshine? Sometimes, but this summer proves that London has some brilliant weather, too!
  2. I have two middle names, Christina and Nicole, which makes for a very long and folksy full-name: Karina Christina Nicole van Ginkel (say that three-time fast!).
  3. I cycle around London on ‘Big Red” – a reliable, albeit heavy, red cruiser with a basket. We’ve been together since May 2017, and I can’t imagine this city without her!
  4. My parents are Dutch, but sadly, I hardly speak a word! Don’t be fooled, though – I can understand it well, so no gossiping about me in my parent-tongue!
  5. To prepare for my dream reincarnation into a dolphin, I enjoy scuba diving and am planning a trip to Komodo Island in Indonesia in the Autumn. Any spectacular dive location recommendations are most welcome for planning future holidays!
