For April’s Contributor Recommends, we spoke to Jarno Stet, Waste and Recycling Manager at Veolia.
“Responsible business is a very dynamic and fast-moving sector where shifts in best practice can affect the extent of your environmental and social impact, the happiness of your employees and how your business is viewed in the market. In Canada, Strandberg Consulting conducted research to understand the trends and best practice in responsible business and its potential to accelerate and advance meaningful social outcomes. For companies at the start of their responsible business journeys, like many on the Heart of the City programme, Strandberg’s findings can provide a useful roadmap demonstrating best practice.
Notably, the research found that there was a continuum or pathway of responsible business practices, much like what we see in the UK and the US, in which companies generally start their foray into social impact with community investment activities, move towards developing a responsible business strategy, then towards responsible business activity and process integration across the business and finally evolve into a business which articulates a social purpose as the reason for its existence. The research posits that this evolution and the accompanying increased ability of companies to leverage corporate resources and expertise towards tackling social risks and challenges has enormous potential to advance meaningful social outcomes.”
