Westminster City Council is calling on their business community to support Westminster’s communities and neighbourhoods by focusing their corporate social responsibility (CSR) agendas on local priorities.
Westminster’s 54,000 businesses support nearly 700,000 jobs across the city. Although many of their businesses already embrace their social responsibilities; the impact of the efforts is often felt outside of Westminster. The Council want to encourage their businesses to make a difference locally and to that end, they have launched two exciting programmes:
1. Heart of the City Westminster – supports businesses to develop their CSR
The Council has partnered with Heart of the City to offer 30 places on their Newcomers programme for Westminster-based SMEs wanting to develop their CSR activities in becoming a responsible business. Heart of the City is the country’s largest responsible business network for small companies and has supported hundreds of London firms to do business better. Joining the free one-year Newcomers programme will provide businesses in Westminster with the tools and knowledge they need to develop a responsible business strategy and initiatives through access to a calendar of events, workshops, online resources and access to their network of supporters.
Sir Harvey McGrath, Chairman, Heart of the City, said: “I’m delighted with our partnership with Westminster City Council. It will expand Heart of the City’s network of businesses still further and enable more Westminster SMEs to kick-start and develop their environmental or community initiatives”
Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment, Sports and Community, Westminster City Council, said: “We want businesses to make a commitment towards supporting a better and greener Westminster. By working in partnership with Heart of the City and the voluntary sector we can help business to make a positive impact on the quality of life in the city”.

The closing date to apply for the free SME support programme – Heart of the City Westminster is the 1st December 2017.
2. The Westminster Lion – recognises organisations and businesses that make an impact locally through their CSR.
The City Council is asking businesses to commit to delivering opportunities for residents and improving their neighbourhoods and environment within the City.
Businesses that work hard to make a positive impact in their communities will be recognised as a Westminster Lion.
This is a free scheme for Westminster’s businesses and those that participate will be invited to business focused events organised by the City Council. All Westminster Lions will be invited to display a specially designed Lion crest on all their business materials, identifying them as responsible Westminster businesses to the wider community.
Once recognised as a Westminster Lion, businesses will be eligible to enter our Lions Awards. These awards will showcase and recognise the achievements of Westminster’s leading businesses and the difference they make to the communities and neighbourhoods that they support.
Cllr Robert Davis, MBE DL, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Heritage, Westminster City Council, said: “We are asking every business who has a stake in Westminster to help make a positive contribution to the city by supporting their local communities. The Westminster Lion standard recognises those businesses that go above and beyond to help ensure that the prosperity of the city is felt throughout all of our neighbourhoods.
The closing date to apply to be a Westminster Lion is the 17th December 2017.
